Name: (-UNPRONOUNCEABLE-)
Alias: Octavian, The Illithid, Mind Flayer, Speaker of the Brain, Mastermind of the Illithid, Lord of the Kingdom of Rrvathulidiainvalimus
Age: 2,044
Ranking: Villain
Physical Appearance:
Personality: Illithids are alien creatures, even in their native realm of existence. No matter how you slice it, Octavian and his entire race are yards apart from their surroundings. In their native astral plane known only as the 'Far Realm', the 'Mind Flayers' as they are more commonly called are cool calm and collected, rational and precise in a dimension filled with the unending gibbering and chaos that could only be described as (-REDACTED DUE TO UNDESCRIBABILITY-). Unerringly cold and, well, alien, even in their current home, a place named by them as 'Gygax' (Illithidian for 'Progenitor' or 'Creator'), most all Illithids are completely self centered and arrogant, viewing all non-Illithids as either food or cattle or both. Mind Flayers however, respect one another and have been known to hold respect for creatures able to match their capacities for thought.
Extremely intelligent and well spoken to the point of mild affability, the Mind Flayer values intelligence above all else. Their communities are lead by Elder Brains (Mind Flayers made of Mind Flayer corpses and thus the memories and knowledge of all that encompass them) and are 'destined' to lead the Illithid race to the murder of their realm's Gods, Primordials, Spirits, Devils and Demons, and install themselves as the true leaders of their multiverse-- a position they had held once before. To do this, Mind Flayers seek ultimate knowledge and perfection, and have many a time threatened the entirety of their realm and just barely averted victory.
Powers/Abilities:
Psychic Static- An aura permeates many powerful Mind Flayers such as Octavian, reflective of their natural Psionic abilities. All within ten meters of Octavian find a great psychic presence encroaching upon them, causing them to be far more suspectable to psychic attacks and abilities then they would be otherwise. Weak-willed within this area find themselves easy to suggestion and quick to dominate. However, as a result of the aura's affects, Octavian finds stealth especially hard at very short distances. This is rather bad for a being that relies on stealth to garner it's meal.
Psionic Aberrant- Illithids train their psychic talents all their lives, and so it is no surprise that even the minor Illithid would have moderate psychic talent. The more powerful among them are possibility some of the most psychically powerful beings about. Octavian, as a Mastermind, is thusly a highly dangerous and powerful Psion. Able to telepathically communicate with any being up to thirty meters away, teleport himself twenty meters at a time, create stunningly painful and agonizing illusions and blasts, and most notably, dominate with a strong and steady gaze into another being's eyes, most Mind Flayers in Gygax are hunted down to the last due to their sheer destructive potential alone.
Seen it- Much less of an ability as it is a personality trait, Illithids have more or less seen or heard of any horror imaginable, and as such, are quite hard to intimidate or drive insane. Horror rarely ever grips a Illithid, and about the only way to knock one off his high horse is to show you are a tangible threat to his life-- in which case, Illithids will panic and be visibly afraid and horrified. Still, as a result, Illithids are highly tolerant to psychic attacks and anything that can install fear in a person.
Bore Into Brain- Octavian and his ilk are not just feared for their psychic prowess alone. Their true mythos and reputation comes from their apptitute in the usage of their...special apendages. To start with, the Mind Flayer's tentacles are no joke, capable of bending steel and acting as fearsome close combat weapons. But the most deadly tool at a Mind Flayer's disposal is their grabs, as for most a Illithid grapple spells death. Once a Flayer has wrapped their tentacles around a victim's head, they draw the body in, either turning it around to face them and inducting it into the most devastating bending of will possible (thralldom) or by piercing the skull with their beek and devouring the brain. Thralldom is a much more permanent and insidious then a simple domination effect, as domination can be shaken off and is impermanent. Thralldom keeps the victims in a hazy and dreamlike state, their will in most cases permanently destroyed in singleminded service to their Mind Flayer masters. Following the spirit of the command and not the letters, Thralls retain just enough of their free will to be horrific- not quite shadows, it is as though their motivation and morals have merely been re-written, and thralls retain their previous personalities to a large extent even though they have been demolished. Thralls think nothing of sacrificing themselves for their masters and think of nothing but the pleasing of their masters, taking great pleasure in a congratulations or a pat on the head. However, thralldom is not permanent-- a thrall is released once a Mind Flayers is murdered, and other esoteric methods have been used to destroy a flayer's iron hold on a mind.
Equipment:
Orb of the Far Realm- Octavian has crafted this magical object out of the souls and brains of several hundred thralls. It is a device to summon creatures and beings from the Far Realm for a time, rendering their aid to him. While it is impermanent and thus imperfect, the Orb has allowed Octavian to communicate with his Kingdom and plot his escape with his Illithid allys.
Staff of Woe- Made of an unknown wood and a crystal of alien origins, the Staff of Woe seems to be an implement for some of Octavians more powerful attacks and abilities. It also grants him several utilities, such as empowering his telepathic range and adding needed volume to his outlandish voice.
AK-47- An AK-47. The octopus has an AK-47. Dear god.
Psychological Flaws:
What is a 'gun'?- Despite being a creature of powerful psychic ability and of a race that is alleged to span universes, the Mind Flayer people are actually very low-tech due to the wide-spread presence of magic and arcanic abilties in Gygax. As such, Octavian is often surprised and fascinated with the wondrous artifacts this universe yields, and though he has a growing interest in them, he is still largely ignorant of them. For example-- he has no idea what a 'tank' is.
Humans are Dinner and sometimes Dogs- Mind Flayers think that most other races are below them, not as a status sort of thing or any such cal, but mentally. Whilst not xenophobic, Illithids believe humans to be on the same level as dolphins or monkeys and are quick to assume the many races of the world have no idea what he is talking about.
Physical Flaws:
I have an octopus for a face- He has an octopus for a face. As such, he is not able to head out into public as easily as, say, a marauding green haired intelligence officer. If he does go out, he does so in a black hood which is very very very uncomfortable for a man with face tentacles.
Other Flaws:
What do you mean you don't speak Deep Speech?!- Mind Flayers speak one language and one language alone-- Deep Speech, the tongue of the Far Realm. A horrific and mind boggling tone in of itself, it is extraordinarily hard to understand or comprehend, and thus, rarely can anyone do so. Whilst they can telepathically communicate telepathy with most any sentinent creature in their tounge, they are completely incapable of speaking anything but Deep Speech, which means that if their telepathy were cut off, none would be able to heed the words of Octavian.
Brief History:
Octavian himself is not much different from the average Mind Flayer Mastermind. In Gygax, Octavian tended directly to the Elder Brain and ran the overarching Illithid Kingdom hidden deep in the Underdark. His incursion into this world was more of an accident or 'happy surprise' then a purposeful intrusion, the whole thing involving a captive Archmage. After personally sucking out the brain of the high wizard and gaining all of his knowledge on the Arcane, Octavian decided to use his new found abilities to open a portal into another dimension within Gygax for his neighboring trading partners the Drow to enter into as part of a plot to cease their Kingdom.
All did not go as planned, however, as instead he opened his way to the Astral Sea and sucked the entirety of the Drowish Kingdom into it's endless expanse. After drifting in the vast blackness for several weeks, he alone escaped through a large and dramatic wormhole which lead him to St. Petersburg, Russia. After slaughtering one twentieth of the cities population, Octavian was shot at by the Russian army and retreated under their superior arms. Since then, he has been hiding out in New York City, pulling the CEO of BranCorp under his thrall and living in luxury as he attempts to make sense of and understand this hyper advanced new world.
