Category: Movie and comic character
Name: Jareth
Alias: None
Age: 1330
Ranking: Neutral
Physical Appearance:
Personality: Cold, cruel, and seductive are all words that describe the Goblin King. Jareth is King of the Goblins and expects to be treated with respect and a little bit of fear. But, as far as actual ruling goes, the Goblin King leaves the day to day affairs of his kingdom to the Mayor of the Goblin City. At times, Jareth resents his position and disregards it altogether, wandering the Labyrinth, singing, and playing cruel jokes on his inferiors. Jareths favorite way to address an inferior is to call them by a mangled version of their original name. Understand, however, that though Jareth might be a hands-off and abusive ruler, his subjects are still his and he will act in their defense.
Jareth is often tempermental and can become irritated, particularly when his goblins are being stupid.
Powers/Abilities:
The Pathmaker: The Labyrinth is more than just walls and paths, it is an external and independent manifestation of Jareth's power, and the Pathmaker is its heart. Jareth's connection to the Pathmaker gives him total control over the structure and physical laws of the Labyrinth.
Teleportation: Jareth is able to magically transport himself to any place of his choosing. Unlike other teleporters who instantaneously vanish and reappear, Jareth slowly fades out of existence, then into it in another place.
Crystal Orbs: Also referred to as ‘Glams’. These crystals are the focus of Jareths powers, he is able to wield them for various magical effects.
Illusion Crafting: Jareth is able to craft highly realistic illusions, often tailored to the dreams of his victims.
Scrying: Jareth is able to view people, places, objects, and even dreams and thoughts through these crystals.
Matter Transmogrification: Jareth is able to transform his crystals into virtually any object imaginable.
Shape-shifting: Jareth is able to transform himself into a number of shapes, though his favorite is that of a barn owl.
Psychological Flaws:
Vanity: Jareth is particularly vain about his appearance and power. Insult either at your own peril.
Physical Flaws:
Physical Combat: Jareth is a trained swordsman, but he hasn’t lifted a sword in several hundred years.
Other Flaws:
Strong Wills: “My will is as strong as yours” are not just words. Jareth has more difficulty affecting strong willed individuals than the mindless masses.
Brief History: Very little of Jareths history is known. Jareth has been called a Fae and a sorcerer. What is known is that sometime early in his reign as Goblin King, Jareth and the Queen of Morraine fell in love. Somehow the Queen hurt him and he externalized his powers in the form of the Labyrinth to keep anyone else from hurting him.
For over 1200 years Jareth ruled, sequestered in his Labyrinth, until he fell in love, again. This time with the human, Sarah Williams. As a gift, Jareth took Sarah's baby brother from her so that she could live without having to constantly watch the baby on weekends. However, his gift was not met with gratitude, and Sarah crossed the Labyrinth to reclaim her brother. Through dangers untold and hardships unnumbered ("there were twelve, at best!!!") Sarah fought her way to Jareth's castle with help from the Kings own goblins. Alone, Sarah faced the Goblin king and proved her will was as strong as his. Sarah defeated the Labyrinth and overcame Jareth's powers, she took her brother back and left Jareth broken.
After this defeat, Jareth began to loose his grip on the Pathmaker and the Labyrinth began to fall apart. In a bid to retain power Jareth went to the Queen Mizumi of Morraine and had her create an Ablation (a portion of someones personality, given its own life and form) of Sarahs dreams. By controling Sarahs dreams Jareth is able to retain control of the Pathmaker. Thirteen years pass and Jareth names Sarahs little brother, Toby, as his heir. When Toby is crowned king of the goblins and claims the Pathmaker, Mizumi claims the Kingdom and its King as her own and imprisons Toby. Meanwhile, Jareth has gone to the human world to get his final victory over Sarah. He leads her to the Enigma Lane Theatre to view his play 'The Canticle of Dreams'.
(OK, now it gets tricky because Return to The Labyrinth V. 4 hasn't come out yet.) But, somehow, Jareth regains his full powers, defeats Mizumi, returns Sarah's dreams without harming the Ablation, and regains his seat as Goblin King.
Reason for being on AM: To continue ruling his kingdom and doing as he pleases.
Sample RP: Jareth sat on his throne tapping his diamond encrusted riding crop on the armrest. The goblins milled about shooting spitballs at chickens and making general idiots of themselves. Directly in front of the throne a pair of goblins fought over some sort of unimportant bauble.
"I hate you!" One snarled at the other as they rolled around scuffling and lifting dust off the floor.
"I hate you!" The other squeeked to the one.
"I hate you all." muttered the perturbed Goblin King.
Abruptly, he rose and, kicking the wrestling goblins out of his way, strode to a balcony overlooking the Goblin City. All this, every life in this Labyrinth is mine... He grimaced. Sometimes I wonder why I didn't just let Mizumi have it...
He turned, cloak billowing, and surveyed his throneroom. His eye twitched at the loud and annoying goblins. "Out! All of you, OUT." Sudden silence filled the room as the goblins ceased to be there. Jareth huffed and slowly faded out of the throne room, the Labyrinth, and the Underground altogether.
