With the power of the Tesseract at his disposal, Loki could freely teleport around dimensions and bring his Chitauri army with him. It had somehow only just dawned on him that he could now invade Asgard and reclaim the Throne. The only problem was the matter of Thor, who was capable of defeating Loki in battle. Brute strength always had been his brother's strong suit... Loki preferred to use more subtle methods. So, he'd sent a disguised Chitauri spy into Asgard. It had been there for days spying on Asgard, awaiting the perfect moment for Loki to strike - a moment where Thor was away and Odin had fallen into his sleep. If Loki could regain the throne he would be able to banish Thor back to Midgard forever. That would be quite the revenge against his brother...
Loki watched as Chitauri poured out from the portals he'd created and swarmed the walls of Asgard. The God of Mischief smirked, watching as the Chitauri overpowered the Asgardian forces. Again Loki questioned if the regular Asgardian guards had the ability to fight properly. Loki knew his Chitauri had been trained by Thanos well. If this plan worked Loki would be able to return to his rightful place on the Throne of Asgard and get his ultimate revenge on his so-called brother and father. Loki resented the days when he desired to impress his father. Trying to do so had only made his father hate him more than he already did.... or so Loki thought. Yes, he believed that Odin could not possibly have loved him or had him on the throne. After all, Odin would rather die than see a Frost Giant on the Throne of Asgard...
It would be a lie to say that Loki was not at all nervous about his brother's return. Thor was a powerful being and able to defeat Loki in combat. His brother had been a thorn in his side for far too long... At least Loki stood a chance against Thor. With the Avengers by Thor's side, Loki would have not stood a single chance unless he was very careful. Against Thor alone ... he stood a chance.

He was on his return from his latest excursion. A minor conflict in Jotunheim had warranted intervention. There had been numerous volunteers to go in Thor's stead, but he had denounced them. The time it would take them to get there would only serve to escalate the matter and call for further action and even involve more members from all sides involved. Thor had gone alone because he could get their in literally no time flat and end the dispute just as quickly.
And just as he had hoped, it had nearly ended with his mere arrival on the scene. The few troublemakers that remained were swiftly dealt with by a mere display of power and cowed, and they left peacably. Thor had remained abroad for a day or so for various minor reasons, and only was he returning.
He first became aware that something was amiss when he was still a long ways from his home, and his eyes narroed darkly in contempt. His fingers curled more tightly around the handle of Mjolnir and he hefted it above his head. He swung it once in a broad circle, and the clouds turned dark. A second time and the wind picked up into a whistling gale. A third time and thunder crashed with deafening intensity. A fourth time, and lightning speared through the clouds.
The God of Thunder had returned....and was most displeased.

It was all working out... By some miracle Loki's plan was actually succeeding! The God of Mischief's smirk turned into a wide, twisted grin as he watched the Chitauri battle the Asgardian Warriors. Suddenly, a group of warriors burst from the ranks of his Chitauri and ran right at Loki, weapons raised. Loki stood from his throne and slowly stepped towards the warriors. In one swift moment Loki threw three throwing knives into the group, narrowing their ranks to four warriors. Loki raised his arm and conjured a blast of mystical energy from his hand. The blast exploded on contact with the warrior it hit. The warrior was knocked off his feet. Loki teleported towards the last two and finished them off with simple blows from his staff. That had been far too simple... Surely these weren't the elite guards of Asgard that he'd once known.
Despite his apparent success.... Loki was unsure of himself still. If Odin were to awaken at that very moment he would face the wrath of the All-Father, who contained power that could make even Thor tremble. And if Thor were to arrive on the scene at that moment, Loki would face another battle with his brother. The God of Mischief did not fear his brother, though he did understand that he was far stronger than him in most areas. Loki simply had to rely on the few areas he did exceed his brother in. They were the more important areas, after all. Besides, he knew that his brother was sentimental about the past... surely a bit of trickery and manipulation would win this battle for sure. Speaking of said battle, Loki heard the sound of deafening thunder in the distance. A sure sign that his brother was nearby.
Loki prepared himself. This would not be an easy battle to win, but Loki knew that he had to win it if he were to obtain his rightful place on the throne. Loki's clothes shimmered and transformed into his Asgardian armor. He would need such armor if he were to do battle with Thor. Then, his brother came into view, soaring through the skies towards Asgard. Loki spoke, his voice projected so that Thor could hear him in the skies. "Welcome back, brother."

Numerous bolts of lightning streaked from the skies, blasting apart Chitauri by the dozen. Lightning and rage practically streamed from Thor's eyes as he descended to the ground himself. He marched directly toward his brother, the mere force of his stride knocking anything in his path sprawling. A handful of Chitauri were actually bold or foolish enough to attack him directly. A laser bolt from one of them struck him a glancing blow on the shoulder, and it caused him to jerk half a step, but he did not slow even for an instant. A single swing of Mjolnir produced a howling gale and swept everything between him and Loki into the air, throwing it to the winds.
The warriors of Asgard were safely deposited back on the ground, somewhat tossed about but otherwise unharmed, while the Chitauri were merely flung at their bretheren like cannonballs. Thor himself continued his march toward Loki. "Why have you r eturned in force, Brother?" His tone was cold and steel-hard. "I cannot forgive this attack. You know this." Mjolnir crackled with electricity as he spoke, coming to a halt some two dozen feet from his brother.
"I will give you one chance, and only one. Leave. Now."

"I've returned because you denied me my throne," Loki said, his voice making his anger obvious. "and I'm going to reclaim it." Indeed, it was denying Thanos' will, but Loki had... disconnected himself from Thanos. It wasn't as if Thanos was able to go to Midgard or any of the other realms without the Tesseract. It gave Loki a small feeling of satisfaction knowing that he'd managed to outsmart the person who had claimed to be above him so openly. After all, he was a god - and could Thanos truly claim to be above a god? Loki smirked at the thought before turning his attention back to the matter at hand - he needed to defeat his brother and gain rule over Asgard.
"Do you truly think that I'll simply leave Asgard and allow you to rule it?" The tip of Loki's sceptre started to glow with blue magical energy. "I will never leave, Thor - I am the true king of Asgard and I will reclaim my throne!" Loki's hand was suddenly engulfed with a flaming aura. The god of mischief began their battle by throwing an enormous burst of flame at his brother. He followed the attack with a blast of energy from his sceptre. Loki knew full well that his attack wouldn't defeat Thor - he doubted it would even hurt him. His brother's power was great - great enough to defeat the monster that had caused his defeat in his attempted conquest of Midgard. But, Loki knew that he could defeat his brother... He would have to if he wished to assume his true title as King of Asgard.

"The throne of Asgard is not yours to claim!" He practically barked the words, an ominous rumble of thunder in the sky above marking his anger. At Loki's declaration that he was Asgard's king, Thor's expression twisted horribly, first forming into a mask of rage so vast it was almost palpable, his teeth bared and his eyes mere viper-slits. Then it contorted into an expression of utter grief; even in this situation, he hated to raise his hammer against family. But as Loki began the battle, Thor's expression turned downcast and neutral, showing only quiet determination.
The blast of flame hit him head-on and exploded about him, but served to do little more than flare his cape out behind him, inflicting no more damage than a raindrop might have. The energy blast was intercepted by Mjolnir, struck out of the air and knocked flying back at Loki as if it were a tennis ball, accompanied by a blistering storm of lightning bolts from several directions at once.
