Behind Closed Doors
Once-ler usually locks himself up within his house. His windows are boarded up, and the top window of his bedroom only has a few openings to where he can slip his arms out and have his eyes be visible to "visitors." The rest of him is usually shadowed out by the contrast of himself against the yellow light from his room. [True appearances shown in linked pictures above, but again, they're spoilers.]

Personality: Once-ler, in his old age, had become a grumpy old man. He's a bit senile due to his age, and doesn't like to have his time wasted. He gets flustered with things easily, which makes him give up on certain things--like the telling of a story to a 12-year-old boy who just wants a tree to impress a girl... He also tends to be old fashioned as well, especially when speaking, and in his actions as well. Though he tends to be sarcastic at times, but also enjoys a good joke. He also has a love for marshmallows that brings out a lighter side of him...Most of his personality, if he's hiding in his room, is seen through his facial reactions--mostly his eyes since the rest of his face is hidden behind wooden boards.</sup>

Inventing and Building Mechanical Devices
Once-ler has always had the knack of inventing his own, original, devices. He's always been handy when it came to building things, despite his body type. You can see examples of his work around his house--such as his doorbell which activates a chain reaction of his door turning around to reveal a giant hammer that is released to hit a floorboard that will send you flying. Another is a boot he's rigged to kick people away from his house when he's become annoyed with them or wants to be left alone. Another is a claw that can stretch from his bedroom window to the ground, along with a Whisper-ma-Phone--a long snake-like device with a cone at the end that allows sound to move through it like a phone.

Regret & Guilt

One thing that will always hit home in Once-ler's heart is the guilt and regret of what he'd done to the forest. He regrets polluting the homes of the Bar-ba-loots and Swommee Swans, and chasing away his only good friend The Lorax.

Age
The Once-ler is well, elderly. He's not as fit as he used to be back in his prime, and is more fragile than ever. In other words, he's weaker than he ever has been due to his old age. The most he's been able to do is be able to chop through wood with an axe.

The Seed
Protecting the last Truffula seed has kept Once-ler away from civilization (along with his guilt) for quite some time after the fall of his company. His social skills began to lack to the point of putting up keep away signs near his house.

History....

Once-ler left his home in hopes of creating his first Thneed. With no help or motivation from his Mother, Aunt, Uncle, or half-Brothers, he set off to find the perfect material for this Thneed. He then discovered a valley full of beautiful Truffula Trees, where the Bar-ba-Loots, Swommee Swans and Humming Fish lived. After seeing the tuft of the Truffula tree, Once-ler decided to chop a tree down to harvest the tufts faster. He then was given a warning by The Lorax, a small orangy-brown creature, not to chop down another tree. Once-ler, of course, refused, causing The Lorax then took it into his own hands to stop the Once-ler.

After almost being drowned, and then brought back to life by the Lorax, the Once-ler promises to not chop down another tree. He then starts to knit & sew his first Thneed. He travels to the nearest town to try and sell it, but each day he fails. Failure after failure followed the first day, but the Lorax kept telling him to keep trying. That was, until one day, the townspeople realized how interesting and neat the Thneed could be, and that they all needed one.

This is when the Once-ler's business began to grow, especially after calling his Mother to bring the entire family to the forest. When they arrive, things begin to change. Once-ler, dying to impress his mother, and keep her love (after she shows so much compassion towards him after he begins to make money), agrees to let his brothers to chop down a few trees to make tuft harvesting go faster. Thus breaking his promise with the Lorax.

As his business booms, his greed begins to grow. Soon he begins to ignore the pleas made by the Lorax as the forest began to dwindle, and the habitat quickly became polluted with the smog and trash of the factory.

Soon enough, the forest was chopped down to the very last tree. With all the trees gone, no more Thneeds can be made, the Thneed factories closed down. Once-ler's family packed up, and his Mother tells him how much of a disappointment he is to her, and even named one of his half-brothers to be her new favorite son.

After his family left, Once-ler was left alone with the Lorax, who, looking back at the Once-ler sadly, picked himself up by the "seat of his pants" and floated away through a hole in the smog, leaving behind only a small pile of rocks with the word "UNLESS" inscribed into them.

Once-ler spent the next 40+ years living in solitude in his broken home staring at the word, "Unless." Every now and then he'd tell his story to those who'd bring him 15 cents, a nail, and the shell of a great-grand father snail. But for the most part, he likes his loneliness.
