Yeah, this thread is... a headcanon thread, but it's supposed to be more for... larger explanations/academic subjects, where you might have to explain some other concepts before you actually get to the headcanon part. Apparently I'm not the only nerd who had theories on shit soooo here's some of my stuff.
Cognitive psychology and hiveminds! FUN STUFF RIGHT
so in an incredibly rushed version of my lectures - people think in really cool ways! In general, we adhere to something that can be abbreviated as POP - Perspective, Ownership, and Privacy, which characterize our mental actions. They are... preeetty simple.
Perspective is how we think and view the world, from a certain point of view. Ownership means our experiences are limited - we don't share them at random. Anything that is subjective is always subjective when we experience it. And Privacy indicates we can't just access someone else's experience. "OH SORRY THIS IS HOW YOU THINK THIS FOOD TASTES OKAY YOU ARE WRONG BYE" thankfully doesn't happen.
Except for Incubators! no wonder they got rid of their emotions.
So, the deal with them - while they have a perspective, if only to gather information in a more efficient way, they also have multiple bodies and inputs so they just turn each perspective into a facet of a larger picture. They don't have any mental privacy. Everything is shared at once, without thoughts being distinguished unless a specific distinction is made to a specific agent, usually about something they are individually involved with - entropy quota or their own contractors or something. Ownership is also sketchy - but what matters most is that while everyone else perceives their experience as centralized, focused on them... Incubators don't. They have passive existences, and so they spectate - what they see doesn't feel like it's happening to them, but around them.
This is a big reason as to why their genuine interactions with individuals are often unsettling - they sincerely do not think the same way as anyone else, ever. It's also why they can talk to Elder Gods and not have their collective shit explode. This was something they deliberately led their species to, which goes hand in hand with getting rid of their emotions. They couldn't really turn into passive catalysts for saving the world without also becoming emotionless - though the seed for feelings is still there (as you can tell if you look at ICC!Kyubey right now hahaha).
