YOU GET A DAEMON
YOU GET A DAEMON.
EVERYONE HERE GETS A FREE DAEMON.
Okay, so. In the universe of the His Dark Materials book series (The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass) daemons are literally people's souls in the forms of animals. Meaning unless you actually physically don't have a soul, you get a talking animal companion who is your soul walking around with you! Cool, right?
SO. Since Meeks and I have already had an AU thread with Oswin and Regina's daemons, I thought it would be cool to hear what you guys think your characters would have for daemons if they were suddenly dropped into the HMD universe.
Remember, a character's daemon reflects their soul, their innermost selves. So, if you character presents themselves as something other than what they are, their daemon will do the opposite! This website is pretty useful and has some analyses of animals as daemons even though it's kind of for people who think daemons are a spirit animal kind of thing, but just ignore that. There is also a name generator, if you're feeling uncreative. Feel free to use names that don't match up to your character's name.
ALSO! As a side note, like 99% of daemons are the opposite gender of your character. So, females will have male daemons and males will have female daemons. Unless your character is a super special snowflake. And, any character that hasn't hit puberty yet will have a daemon that changes form. These are unsettled daemons, who will eventually settle when their human reaches a point in their lives when they're sure of who they are. IF your character hasn't hit puberty yet, you can either just give a name and the form their daemon likes to take the most OR give us what that daemon will eventually settle as.
Posting here goes a little something like there.CHARACTER'S NAME & DAEMON'S NAME [img*]PICTURE THAT WON'T STRETCH THE SITE PLS[*/img] Daemon's Form TELL US WHY

ANYA & PROGONOSKESIndian Flying Fox Bats are creatures associated with darkness, and nighttime. People often fear them without knowing much about them - they're associated with creepiness and haunted houses and Halloween. Kind of like demons. But bats - especially this specific breed - are actually quirky, chattery, curious creatures. Their up-in-your-face way of investigating thing sometimes alarms people, but they typically don't mean much harm. And I've already made the bizarre/adorable comparison. So that's why this fits Anya! And Progo is...nearly as loud as she is, half the time. He's much more chatty with other daemons and people than daemons typically tend to be, and he also shares Anya's...erm...bluntness. Although to be fair, he's mostly a bit more level-headed than she is, at least.
CASTIEL & EVELINAGolden Eagle As an angel, I thought it only appropriate for Cas to have a demon capable of flight - and seeing as Supernatural angels are depicted as fierce, formidable GAWD WARRIORS, I wanted to choose a bird of prey. A golden eagle is a...kinda scary lookin' bird, but graceful and beautiful and ~MAJESTIC~ at the same time, and eagles in general are symbols of strength/courage/wisdom, so there's that. Evelina, like Cas, is stoic and proud, with little patience or understanding for humor. Her knowledge of human customs and social interaction doesn't far exceed his, but being even more reserved and silent than Cas is, it isn't quite so obvious with her. Like him, her stubbornness and fierce will to stand up for the underdog in any situation is what drives her.
RIDLEY & FELIXCoyote The coyote, in Native American myth, was known as the Trickster. Sly, cunning, and mischievous, it was a trouble-maker who thoroughly enjoyed the mischief he caused - a force that could not be controlled, who did as he pleased, and who never took himself too seriously. And this totally reflects Ridley's rebellious, mischievous, darker-now-that-she's-Claimed personality. Felix doesn't quite fit the 'scraggly and scruffy' image most people associate with coyotes, though - like Ridley herself, he sort of...radiates an air of enchanting beauty. With soft, golden-red fur, a lean, muscular build, and the same intense golden eyes as his human counter part, Felix is an intriguing animal who shares every bit of Rid's spunk and authority-be-damned attitude. He also shares Ridley's Dark nature, though - he is sometimes more outwardly disconcerting and menacing than she is.
RED & ADONIElf Owl The fact that Red's daemon settled as a nocturnal animal most likely reflects how drawn she is to the night, and how much time she spends outside during it - especially in wolf form. Speaking of which - it's quite an odd sight, to see an enormous wolf racing through the forest with a tiny owl companion soaring overhead. Adoni is an jumpy, fluttery, excitable little thing that so clearly reflects Red's boundless energy. He shares her friendliness and her kindness, but also some of her feral side - he's more animal-like in behavior than most daemons are, often relying on instinct over reason. He is the unsuppressed, unashamed, free spirit that Red is so careful to control at times.
RUBY & PYTHIOSBlack Mamba Demon. Snake. They're kind of intertwined, aren't they? Oh and yes, demons do have...souls. Twisted, tortured, and all-all around screwed up souls. So Pythios is a twisted, tortured, all-around screwed up daemon. I'm not really sure if a demon would have a physical, visible...daemon, but this is hypothetical. Sneaky, underhanded, but venomous and ultimately deadily just like Ruby herself, Pythios prefers to avoid confrontation - but will most definitely not hesitate to strike if he's cornered. Like Ruby, he too retains memories of his former life, though, and that makes him a little less naturally inclined to be aggressive, but make no mistake - he's as dangerous as his counterpart.
EM & KANTAIUnsettled Kantai is unsettled, being that Em is only eleven. One of his favorite forms to take, however, is an otter - especially if there's water nearby, then it's a given. The other forms he likes are similarly playful - a hummingbird, a tabby house cat, a hedgehog - and sometimes, when he wants to be particularly flashy, a large stag. Kantai, like Em, is very adventurous and inquisitive about the world around him, although he's a bit more mature than she is, and often has to keep her out of trouble. Unlike Em, he is...completely terrified of that box of hers. He begs and pleads with her not to go near it, but he can't seem to persuade her. It's interesting, to think about the effect a daemonic possession would have on a daemon. Would they flicker? Weaken? Fade out completely? At some point, poor Kantai is probably going to have to find out.
PHOEBE & FELLGolden Retriever Phoebe's playful, good-natured, light-hearted - and overall kind nature reflects that of a golden retriever's. Like a golden retriever, Phoebe is energetic, but careful to be gentle when it's necessary, friendly, sensitive and the sort that most people just seem to instinctively trust. Fell is a lot more...focused than she is, though. He tends to be a bit more serious and less easily distracted - but while their respective personalities seem different at first glance, at heart they are the same - brave, determined, compassionate beings with a near constant need for social interaction, and a touching devotion to their family.
REGINA & SYLPHLynx I knew from the start that Regina's daemon had to be a feline. Like a cat, she is quiet, cunning, intelligent, and wary of newcomers - but she also possesses a certain, terrifying vicious streak. Considering that she's from the Enchanted Forest - a very North American forest-y type setting - I settled on a lynx of all the various feline forms I could have chosen. Lynx are also typically solitary animals, except in the cases of family - which I think describes Regina quite well as well. Sylph shares Regina's coolness and distrust, yet he is perhaps a tad more open with his emotions than she is - often more willing to help others initially, he is somewhat a source of her compassion.
MORGANA & ALTAIRWolf A wolf is an animal known for its loyalty - family-oriented and fiercely protective of their pack members. Morgana shares the same fierce loyalty - and with it, an ever-present fear of betrayal. Wolves are also misunderstood animals - in many legends and fairy tales, they're painted as human-eating monsters, and I think a lot of Arthurian legends give Morgana the same treatment (figuratively...I don't really think there are any legends about her eating people), so there's symbolism there. Altair shares the vivaciousness and warmth of the person Morgana originally was - he is inquisitive and even a bit mischievous, although like Morgana, he has become more reserved and withdrawn over time. His temper's a bit more...quick, though. His snarling and snapping will often reflect her anger, even when she gives no sign of it herself.
SARAFINE & RAVANABlack Panther 2spooky dark caster gets 2spooky daemon :OOO. No but um. Ravana is just kind of like Sarafine's shadow, this sleek, black, fanged, clawed...okay maybe not exactly like a shadow. But like her, he's this dark, intimidating figure with bright golden eyes - a living, breathing, killing machine, but one that is cunning and quiet and doesn't always strike right away. Isn't that reassuring? Ravana doesn't say much - in fact, he and Sarafine rarely even openly communicate, preferring to Kelt. He seems a lot more...subdued than she is, a lot less bubbly and playful. Alternatively, when it comes down to it, he's every bit as brutal and bloodthirsty. He, like her, lost most of the good inside him in the years that followed her claiming - so needless to say, these two are a dangerous pair.

This looks like fun~ Death & AthenaGreat Horned Owl After searching around the Daemon site, I decided that Death would have some sort of Owl. Owls tend to symbolise intelligence, which Death has a lot of--he's been around a long time, so he knows quite a lot. Some of the aspects of the Great Horned Owl that I felt reflected on Death's "soul" were:
- "Adaptable to new and changing situations." [Death and his Brothers have been around for a while, so they've constantly had to change appearances/change their "horses' appearances" to fit into the ever-changing world. That and for someone that's been around as long as God has--neither knowing who came first--Death has a pretty good knowledge of how to work a car and use silverware.]
- "Others see you as an intense, intelligent person." [Death has a strong presence to him, or at least I felt he was when we first met him, and he is extremely intelligent--having been around for so long. What hasn't Death seen in his life so far?]
- "Despite being so big, deep down, you’re insecure and not as tough as people think you are. A lot of who people see you as on the outside is different from who you really are on the inside." [This reflects on my own personal headcannons for Death. Well, not including the insecure or tough part--because Death is very strong and I'm pretty sure he's extremely confident in himself. Anyways, for the "inside bit" I feel that Death does have a soft spot for animals and Humans that have been reaped before their first assigned Death dates--even though he doesn't show it often. *I feel that Death has a "book/list" filled with the death dates of every Human on the planet--each death date being recorded upon the child being born, but they're not permanent due to murders/sicknesses/illnesses/ect.*
- "Not interested in putting on a show or attracting attention." [Death doesn't try to bring attention to himself, he likes to be left alone to do his work and look after his Reapers.]
- "Quite logical and a lover of knowledge."
- "You have an intimidating nature that keeps you from most arguments and fights, as no one wants to tangle with you." [Seriously, would you want to get into a fight with Death?]
- "Hierarchical - you're at the top." [He's Death, and pretty much nothing can really kill him except for his scythe. And he knows God. So I'm pretty sure he stands at the top.]
Mituna Captor & Aesina (aka 5P077Y)Antelope ==> Spotted Hyena Since we're not given much information about Mituna before his "incident," based on what he had done for his friends, I feel his Daemon's first form was some kind of Antelope. [Based on looking up the symbolism of some Daemon Animals, under "Fierce when Protecting" was an Antelope (fierce when protecting, flexibility, self-sacrifice, swift action, tolerant). And after more research, I found Daemons can change forms as the soul/your inner self changes.] Now, since his accident has changed him rather "dramatically" in personality and how he acts, his Daemon probably would have changed form to reflect the change--and I believe it changed into a Spotted Hyena. (Also, Mituna tends to call her "5P077Y" (Spotty) due to the fact that he continually forgets her name due to his memory issue.)
- "You’re very open with yourself, sexually – and so long as you have a bit of a support system, you don’t really care what other’s think about it." [He makes sexual jokes quite often in the flash game when we first meet him.]
- "You’re usually the low man on the totem pole. You’ve got no problem with this, you readily accept your place anywhere and go to make the best of it.
You’re more submissive in your relationships, you’re the sort to go “I don’t know, what do you want to do” in order to make the other person happy. It doesn’t bother you any, you excel in trying to keep order and moral up.
You spend a lot of time with your friends, you’re the kind of person that they’d call if they were drunk and would need a ride home. You’ll do random acts of kindness. But, lets not take you for granted here. " [The analysis was mostly about females having a Hyena Daemon, but this was the male section, and I felt it pretty much describes Mituna in his current state. Though I wouldn't suggest calling Mituna to drive you home if you're drunk. He can't drive.]
- "Hyenas tolerate insults very well, they usually see right through bluffs and insults, and are quite adept at delivering a logical blow back without getting their feather’s ruffled. " [Mituna tends to apologize when he's being insulted instead of getting angry...well, not including Meenah, but she did kill him.]
- "You rather not start projects on your own, you may have a tendency to not finish them. Instead you work best when you’re working with someone else, or finishing what other’s have already started." [Mituna needs help when doing things, for example skateboarding--he needs Latula's help most of the time because he...wipes out quite a lot.]
- "You’re most likely to want to be around your friends when something fun’s going on, when you need back up, or when you just want some ‘you time.’" [Especially if those friends are his Moirail Kurloz or his Matesprite Latula. :3]
- "You’re know for your laugh. While you’re jokes aren’t the funniest, you are a ‘fun’ person to be around." [Mituna tries to make jokes often, even if they aren't funny to everyone else.]
Jefferson & AliceArctic Hare
Mostly because I think Jefferson really should have a rabbit/hare as his animal because Mad Hatter so sue me.
- "The first impression that an Arctic hare soul tends to leave is that you are distant and aloof. You prefer to stay out of the spotlight, so most people don’t really notice you." [Pretty much screamed Jefferson currently. He doesn't like to be noticed or stand out, and can even come off as unfriendly towards some people.]
- "Sometimes you don’t mind being around other people, and other times you want to be alone."
- "You don’t mind going to some parties and family get-togethers once in a while, but if you get bored or uncomfortable, you will quietly leave to go do your own thing. Because of this whatever attitude with friends, you are not clingy and are rarely protective of people. But when you are happy, you can act playful around your friends and family."
- "You always try to avoid attention and prefer to blend in with the crowd, although you might keep something the same as you blend, since you know you aren't going to be there long." [Reasons why we never saw him around Storybrooke when he had to go grocery shopping. Haha just kidding.]
- "You probably have a speedy thought process. It might start with a gut reaction based on feeling, but if you take a breath and slow down, you think logically. You probably solve problems the same way, but if it doesn't work sometimes, you will change slightly to make it fit." [Make the hats work, Jefferson, make the hats work.
I'm going to pay for that comment later.]
- " If something really matters to you, you will protect it from others, unless someone comes along that is stronger than you, because you know that you cannot win." [No but seriously, don't touch Grace or you're gunna pay.]
[/and I'll do the rest later I'm so lazy right now. I just posted the ones I'd want to drop into an AU thread right now. xD]

EPONINE & VALERIANArctic Fox Adaptability is a big factor in this. In appearance, arctic foxes are small and cute and they really just look like big puffy fluffballs that you wouldn't expect to survive the harsh conditions they live in. Which is true of Eponine as well, especially when she first arrived on AM. Rather than a small, fluffy thing, though, she was more small and skinny and generally sort of pathetic looking. In reality, both Eponine and the arctic fox are scavengers and extremely adaptable to the worse of circumstances, be it the tundra or the streets of Paris. Valerian is very much the protector, despite his size and general form. Eponine's loyalty to the very few people she actually cares for comes out in him, and while he's as reserved as she is, in AM-verse he often pushes her to be a little more confident or social with other people. CHRISTINE & CELESTINMourning Dove The mourning dove is a songbird, but there's something that sets it apart from any other of it's kind. Rather than the cheerful chirping, it's song is more soft and gentle, which is really what Christine would be more inclined to do, were she a bird and not a person. Her natural disposition is sweet and kind, and she has sort of the...softness, I guess, that a dove would have. Despite this, she's not a stereotypical pure white dove, but rather something a little more hardy. She did spend a lot of her childhood before her father died in the more rural parts of Sweden, after all. Celestin is a gentle soul as well, perhaps even more than Christine. He is the shier part of her, a quiet presence settled on her shoulder, but holds a great deal of compassion for his counterpart and the people she's close to. It's also relevant to note that Celestin didn't settle until Christine was sixteen, due to her being stuck in a very child-like mindset. BAELFIRE & JAYUnsettled Even though Baelfire is fourteen, his daemon still hasn't settled, mostly due to a lot of the issues he's been going through. Maturing fully is sort of touch when you're trying to keep your dad from using magic, and to be honest, Bae's been more worried about Gold than himself and hasn't had a lot of time to really think about himself and who he is. Because of this, Jay has remained unsettled, though her favorite form to take is that of a lioness. She's sort of the parent Baelfire only before Rumpel gained the Dark One's powers, and acts very much as a guide to him, if somewhat stern. Jay embodies his courage, strong will and determination to keep his father from going down the wrong path.
Her other favorite forms to take are an ermine, a border collie and a red-tailed hawk. OSWIN & OSSIANDREJack Russell Terrier So, Jack Russell Terriers are basically Oswin in dog form. They're wild, enthusiastic, energetic and can be a stubborn little handful for people who have no idea what they're doing with them. Ossiandre is just as much a ball of energy as Oswin is, constantly in a state of motion if he can help it, even if it's just trotting back and forth at her heels when she's standing still. He possesses all of the intelligence that she does and totally isn't afraid to show it off. If there's a bigger enemy than him that the rest of Team TARDIS is going up against? Both Oswin and Ossiandre are gonna go right after it, size be damned. He's also exceedingly touchy-feely with other daemons, particularly the ones that belong to the members of team TARDIS, and even Sylph as long as he'll allow it. He can't help being a cuddler, okay? DONNA & MALIKFennec Fox What? Donna, one of the biggest character personality-wise, stuck with a tiny little adorable thing for a daemon? Jemi, you must be out of your mind! Ah, but fear not. Tiny and adorable Malik may be, but THERE IS REASONING. Fennec foxes, though small in size, are vocal little things, and the most social of all foxes. They're very family-oriented, and spend lots of time around others like them. Malik, being the daemon of Donna Noble, is probably the sassiest daemon you will ever meet. He's a lot more vocal around other daemons, and not afraid to speak out along with Donna to make himself heard if he has any kind of thought about anything. CLARA & MORDECAIAbyssinian Cat So, I gave a lot of thought as to whether Oswin and Clara would have the same daemon, and finally decided that they most likely wouldn't. Because, although they're technically the same person, or at least two people linked as one, they're very different from each other due to circumstances, making Clara more of a cat daemon person than a dog daemon. Because while Oswin is this uncontrollable spark of energy, Clara tends to have her own enthusiasm more under control, even if she does get rather overexcited at times. And a lot of this comes out in Mordecai who, despite having the capacity to be playful and energetic, is generally more collected as a whole. And he rides around on Clara's shoulders a lot. LENA & AETHERSnowy Owl 2SPOOKY!!! No, but owls are often associated with witches and magic harry potter :] and I thought one would be a good choice for Lena. A snowy owl in particular because it lives in both the light and the dark, hunting both at nighttime and in the daytime. They're also rather unique as opposed to other owls because Lena is a super special snowflake yolo Caster. Aether only just recently settled into his owl form, when Lena Claimed herself for the Yolo the Light and the Dark. Up until then, he shared Lena's anxiety about turning Dark and often took the form of a 2spooky black crow with golden eyes. With his recent settling, he's become a bit more mellow, but he tends to be rather serious in nature and prefers to Kelt with Lena rather than outright speak to her. ELPHABA & XERXESBlack Cat Cats are known to be independent and generally antisocial animals, and black cats even moreso. And while Elphaba is anything but unfeeling, the canon material makes it pretty clear that she has...a few problems fitting in. Which, at first, bothers her but she's not about to change the way she acts entirely in order for people to like her. Black cats are often associated evil and magic, but really, they're just about the same as any other cat. Which is sort of what Elphaba goes through during the course of the musical, though she's...um...definitely different :] Xerxes encompasses a lot of Elphie's independent attitude and is actually a lot more pricklier than her when it comes to other people or daemon. also lol witch with a black cat daemon :] :] :] how could i not IDRIS & NEBULAEBlue Morpho Butterfly Nebulae was originally Idris' daemon. Like, actual Idris not TARDIS!Idris. She took the rather plain and unassuming form of a mouse and was called Rhea until Idris was chosen to be the one to have the TARDIS' matrix downloaded into her. She was actually the only choice there was, given that she was one of those super special snowflakes with a female daemon, and it's been hinting at that all TARDISes have female souls. So, when all of that happened, the soul of the TARDIS became two separate beings and Rhea the mouse daemon became Nebulae the butterfly daemon. And Nebulae is very much like Idris herself, an errantic little creature constantly fluttering around and getting more up close and personal than most daemons generally do. She can't break the taboo of other people touching daemons that aren't there's, but she comes pretty close sometimes. Nebulae also has a link with the Doctor and his daemon, and the taboo is pretty much doesn't exist when it comes to them.

MAKYA & ANVINDRWolverine Wolverines are known for being tenacious, cunning and pretty damn strong beasts – well they're related to honey badgers so what else can you expect – and that kind of temperament suits Makya just fine. Besides, they are hardy and also frost-resistant and ice is the one thing that ruins her day so it was just destined to happen. They're rather independent and wander back and forth in between mates and children, much like Makya's own drive to be independent and move on from even her valued relationships. Anvindr is as blunt as she is, with a pragmatic core. He'll say the truth, no matter how ugly or painful it may be, and is honestly even worst at tact – while Makya usually realizes what might hurt someone else and keeps from being too blunt to people she likes, he just charges in. He also likes to brag, and before he settled, showed up in the COOLEST FORMS to make sure everyone was suitably impressed by how awesome he was. Inevitably, he taunts Makya about his cold resistance and then she threatens to throw him into walls. He's super protective of his space and doesn't even cuddle up to Makya often, unless either of them really needs it – and of course, the other daemons need to Keep Away. MITHOS & SCYLLAGyrfalcon Birds and the sky are hopeful and idealistic! Give the hopeful idealist a daemon that prefers bird forms. Then let that idealist's sister be killed by a human, and let him watch as the world teeters on the brink of destruction due to the actions of humans, and see what happens. Scylla is the result of that – she settled into a predatory form at the height of Mithos' grief and rage, when he no longer had any innocence left to him, and her personality was also shaped by that. Scylla settled prematurely, and reflects what Mithos often hides around strangers – she is judgemental and prone to hating anyone who has wronged them, especially humans. She holds grudges, lashes out at perceived slights and holds herself aloof from everyone else. Other people are threats, or tools, and she won't hesitate to attack them if they prove themselves to be the former. She doesn't tolerate distractions from their goals, and if possible, pursues what Mithos wants with more zeal than he does. Since her attitude towards almost everyone interferes greatly with Mithos' attempts to be underestimated, she rarely talks except when they're alone, helping along the impression that she is haughty and cold. THE CONDESCE & CICATEREUSShort-finned Mako Shark Cicaterus is terrifying, to put it lightly. He is vicious and bloodthirsty and conveys this in the calmest, most relaxed of tones. Murder and conquest and, of course, the Condesce's current focus of interest, are his world, and it is perhaps more chilling because to him, plainly, killing things is just what he does. Birds fly, sharks swim, he kills without any particular enmity. He lacks the Condesce's passion, her hatred of humans, but they share that need for devastation and bloodshed, and as far as he is concerned, it is his only real purpose. Other than being supremely deadly and inclined to slaughter, he is quite calm and even cordial, quite unlike the Condesce's inclination to become crass when angry. He's quick to soothe those around him by assuring them that he doesn't hate them at all – they're simple prey and he doesn't even begrudge their attempts to fight back or flee. Of course, being killed by him is also inevitable but that's not reason to be rude. SHIO & KORAYUnsettled Valorous and quick to step in, at first Koray seems to be far more certain a presence than Shio herself. He favours large, protective forms, as if to make up for Shio's size and the way she stays back and doesn't often make decisions. He is also the one to try to entice her to do more – though it's not often the best idea to listen to him. He's the first to try and have others fear or respect her, and quick to threaten and warn others off if either of them are unnerved. Just as she is very much an Aragami – and the only one to have a daemon, as well – he is hardly separated from her instincts, and prone to changing into vicious forms whenever she becomes hungry. Watching him is a good way to gauge her current mental state due to her own reflex to try to stifle her urges.
His favoured form is that of a sable antelope, though he also likes to appear as a tiger and a golden eagle. When Nova awakens, he takes on the form of a large wyvern.

ELLIS AND ATTICUS Black-footed ferret For a long time, Ellis thought Atticus would never settle. From polecats to birds to cats to dogs, he never seemed to be ready to stop. In a way, she couldn't care less, so neither did he... then she started caring. For some reason, it became difficult for her to ignore the fact that her daemon wasn't settling. So she did her best, to try and get Atticus to settle. It didn't seem to work. Everyone in her class had settled daemons. Everyone but her. It was only when she reached 9th grade- when she met her closest friends- that finally, Atticus settled. When he did, Ellis wasn't particularly surprised by the form. Atticus and her had always preferred Mustelidae forms, and besides, the choice was fitting, for both of them.
