It'd been about a year since Tom had had a "Hyde Incident." He was doing quite well rebuilding his own life with his sons and loving wife. He found a new job, was able to finally live at home, and he hadn't visited his safe house since then.
Now he spent most of his time either at work or with his family. After all of the past events, Claire had thought it would be a good idea for the doctor to have his own private vacation. She thought that it would be good for his mental health--give him a chance to rediscover himself after trying to figure out the differences between himself and Hyde for so long.
So she'd bought him plane tickets and a rental car and shipped him off to the USA.
What brought him to a small town called Storybrooke he'd never know. But he deemed it quiet enough to be able to relax with his thoughts. Now that Hyde wouldn't constantly bother him by trying to force the doctor to let him have his turn for a while.
But first he had to find himself a place to stay, which brought him to Granny's Diner. He figured he'd be able to get some information there about the locals and the town itself--it seemed to be the only eatery in town...though he worried that his social skills were lacking..and besides trying to get information, he was a bit hungry.

Ever since he talked to Red, Doctor Whale had been spending more time at Granny's Diner. "More time" meaning that he went there for most meals... which was reasonable, considering he hadn't actually bought food for himself in a while. He would probably get around to that soon, though he still didn't exactly want to start walking around Storybrooke more. Everyone else there was "Prince Charming" - people though he was more of a monster than anything.
Although he felt uncomfortable walking around most of Storybrooke, Granny's Diner was the exception. For one thing, it was somewhere he could talk to Red, and it also served food. Socializing and food were basically the two things Doctor Whale needed the most. So, he was pretty fortunate that there was somewhere where he could get both.
But still, the dilemma of magical hearts was prevalent in his thoughts. It had been so easy when all he had to do was take them from Regina, but he couldn't exactly do that anymore. Really, he wasn't sure why Regina couldn't let him have the hearts, considering that it seemed like he'd tried to help her bring back Daniel twice. He'd only really done it once, but even that should have been enough. It seemed that nobody else really knew what he was trying to do instead of assuming the worst.
Walking down the sidewalk, Doctor Whale noticed something a bit off. There weren't too many cars parked outside of Granny's. Then again, most people walked around Storybrooke. It wasn't exactly the largest town. Even stranger, as soon as the doctor entered the diner, it was almost empty excluding the workers and a few customers. One of which he didn't recognize. Being the town's doctor, Whale sort of knew everyone in town. This man was new to him.
Storybrooke didn't really get many visitors, and when they did people started to talk. There was always the risk of them finding out about everyone being "fictional" characters and telling everyone. Then Storybrooke would become more of a tourist attraction than a town. Doctor Whale figured that it would probably be wise to talk to this man. "Hello." Doctor Whale said, walking towards him. "I haven't seen you in town before. Are you visiting?"

Out of habit, Tom stiffened as someone addressed him. After being hunted for so long because of Hyde, he was used to others talking to him unless they wanted his other half.
Though he took a sharp breath before turning towards the man that has spoken. Upon turning he saw Dr. Whale, and put a small smile on his face as he looked over the other male.
"Yes, well, I'm on vacation...my wife thought it'd be a good idea to tour the country," he answered rather shakily, not wanting to give much away about himself.

On vacation to Storybrooke? While not unheard of in recent days because of the curse breaking, that was a little strange. It wasn't exactly a vacation spot... then again, Doctor Whale wasn't really the vacation sort of person. Perhaps he had been, before remembering who he was, but those days were over. He wasn't as careless as he once was, and he certainly didn't have time for vacations. However, he could understand that Storybrooke was a seemingly quiet place, somewhere that someone could relax for a bit... the truth was quite the opposite.
"Ah... Well, I'm sure you'll find Storybrooke accomodating enough." Again, the truth was the opposite. Doctor Whale wasn't quite sure if he would be decently safe in Storybrooke, much less find it pleasant, if he met the wrong people. To the uninformed, Storybrooke could be incredibly dangerous... hopefully, this man would leave quickly and move on to somewhere safer. "My name is Doctor Whale, by the way."

Tom forced a smile as he gave a small nod to Whale.
The place was quiet enough--or at least his wife thought so--for him to get some alone time without Hyde in his head. Though if he learned of what was really happening in the town it wouldn't phase him. After being stuck with Hyde for so long, magic and alternate universes wouldn't be much of a shock to the good Doctor.
Though of course, he wouldn't have any way to protect himself if anything went down. Not with his other, stronger, faster self out of the picture. (Even though he prefered it that way.)
"Tom Jackman," he replied, offering his hand politely to the gentleman.
