In her time as the Doctor's companion, Oswin Oswald had seen many, many things. Really, up until a certain point, she'd been pretty sure there wouldn't be anything that would ever really surprise her again, after having been to so many different planets and seen so much of what the universe had to offer. There were things that could awe her, of course. All it really took to do that was sticking her out in a place with a good view of the stars. And, things that could excite her and maybe make her take pause for a moment, but never surprise her. Or so she'd thought.
And, as expected by everyone else, Oswin had been wrong.
A Time Lord. Another Time Lord. Or, well. She guessed the right term for this regeneration would be Time Lady, but still. A Time Lady from before the Time War, one who knew the Doctor and maybe, just maybe, one that could make him feel a little less alone. Oswin could only do so much when it came to easing the loneliness she knew plagued the man she idolize so much. She wasn't one of his own kind, there were no more of them left in the whole of the universe. And as much as Oswin tried to be there for him and make him feel not so very alone, there was always a line that she could cross that kept them separated. She was only human, after all.
But the Corsair wasn't. And while Oswin's initial plan was to get her to the Doctor as quickly as possible, surely just a little...adventuring couldn't hurt. The two of them had been quick to...ahem, engage in a little friendly flirting when they'd first encountered each other and perhaps just a bit more as well. Oswin couldn't really help it if the Time Lord was in quite an attractive regeneration, after all. And honestly, she was secretly just waiting to see the look on the Doctor's face when he'd figured out what had happened between the Corsair and his companion.
Of course, there were other types of adventuring going on as well. The more conventional sort, at least. Oswin was quick to agree to accompany the Corsair on a few of the missions from the Time Lords themselves to steal pieces of technology and other various items from other species. It was a different sort of adventure than she usually had with the Doctor and Oswin embraced it immediately, using her skills with computers to their advantage and generally accompany the Time Lady as much as she could. The Doctor wouldn't mind her being gone, he had Donna to keep him in line while Oswin was out and about.
She sent him a message or two to let him know she was safe, but kept her knowledge of the Corsair a secret for now. Best to let him meet her again face to face, after they'd returned from their travels.
The surface of the planet Anat was completely covered in one of the thickest jungles in the universe. Oswin guessed it sort of made sense to hide what they were after in the very heart of this place, though really, the giant temple sort of gave away where it was from the start. Following at the Corsair's side, Oswin looked up at the enormous stone structure. "Not really much of a hiding place," she remarked. Really, if you wanted something kept secret and underground, why put a huge temple over it? Especially something so valuable as this Diamond of Amat, an infinite power source for nearly anything in the galaxy.
It was really only supposed to be a legend, but then again, so was this temple. And this planet for that matter, Oswin couldn't imagine how long it had been since outsiders had set foot on it. That was the really brilliant thing about traveling sometimes, she was the probably the first human to ever see this place and many of the other places she'd been to with the Doctor.
The temple rose ominously over their heads as they neared, the stonework covered in whatever this planet's equivalent of ivy was. Even so, Oswin could still make out the raised carvings of mythological, unearthly beasts guarding the entrance way, all snarling jaws and long, curving claws. It looked like something out of one of those old adventure movies she'd seen as a kid, only a bit more alien. "Right. Well," Oswin flashed the Corsair a grin, snapping her torch out of her belt with one hand. "Better get started. 'Less you're just planning on spending the whole time out here." Fearlessly, she started towards the entrance of the temple, being careful not to set off anything that might be lying in wait for them.
You never could tell with spooky old temples, after all.
