Category: The World Ends With You, Canon
Ranking: Neutral
Reason for being on AM: Rift
Basic Details
Age: Ageless
Species: Angel
Physical Appearance:
RG/UG: Upwards of ninety percent of the time you’ll see him, Sanae isn’t really all that much to look at. He’s about average height, standing at 5’11”, and quite slim, which he somehow manages to pull off without looking awkward or lanky. He’s got a bit of muscle on his frame, but it’s not particularly defined, nor readily visible. That, coupled with his posture (he almost perpetually slouches) and demeanor lead to him looking very non-threatening. He’s a bit scruffy, not having a full beard by any means, though it’s a bit more than just a five o’clock shadow too. His hair is black and has juuuust a bit of length to it, just enough to be brushed straight up and back, into a bit of a ducktail hairstyle.
In his own words, he’s “hip,” and dresses the part. He’s most often seen wearing black slacks, a white button down shirt with the loose sleeves rolled up past his elbow, and the first few buttons undone. Over that he wears a charcoal gray vest, a black watch (which may or may not be more than just a watch), and black sandals, regardless of the weather. He’s never seen without his half-moon sunglasses, which he wears halfway down his nose. His eyes are perpetually half lidded, giving him an air of nonchalance and disinterest, despite what his real emotions may or may not be.
Of course, as an angel, he also has a rather impressive pair of wings that manifest only when he wants them to. White, feathered, fluffy, they're pretty typical angel wings, though that said, he can manifest them as either purely visual (which means they'd be seen, but have no mass), or truly physical (seen AND touchable :3).
Noise form: Hanekoma is unique in the fact that not only can he take on a Noise form, but said form is split into two separate entities. The form all together is called “Panthera Cantus,” and is made up of Leo Cantus and Tigris Cantus, which are in essence humanoid Noises: a lion and a tiger. Leo Cantus is a deep crimson color from the waist up, covered in thick, sleek fur. The face is that of a lion, framed by a wild looking deep red mane, with curved horns arcing up, but the torso and arms (aside from the color and fur) are rather humanoid looking. The hands, however, are deadly claws, slightly more elongated and flexible than a lion’s paws would be. From the waist down, Leo Cantus is graffiti, starting as a similar shade of red, and following a gradient through orange and gold, with the feet and tail eventually ending in a bright yellow color. Bright orange graffiti marks the shoulders and across the chest of this form.
The other half, Tigris Cantus is a very feminine, humanoid form. The legs and upper body of this form are a deep blue of varying shades, with jagged, black markings. The face is a striking middle ground between tigress and human, with bright white eyes, and pointed cat’s ears on a constant alert. From the elbows down, Tigris Cantus is black graffiti with bright blue accents, once again forming deadly, almost handlike claws. There are additional graffiti blades at the back of the elbow joint, extending from the lower arms, and the form’s tail is an aqua blue and black graffiti tail, ending in a sharp, almost barbed looking point, much like a devil’s tail. Tigris Cantus also has a pair of rather impressive graffiti wings, which start a bright aqua color closest to the body, and gradually darken to black at the multi-pointed wing tips.
Personality:
On the surface, Hanekoma is incredibly laid back, almost to a fault. In casual situations, whether in the RG or UG, he embodies the word perfectly, even in the loose, half slouched way he tends to carry himself. Meeting him for the first time in such an environment, you’d more likely than not get the impression that he doesn’t care much about anything. He’s snarky, with a dry wit and a habit of brushing off things that people tell him -- it all seems to roll right off his back. He’s an expert at taking things as they come, and will often shamelessly promote his cafe, even at incredibly inappropriate moments.
In Game related situations, however, while he keeps the same general demeanor, he gains an air of authority. No one in the game aside from the Composer knows who he really is, and yet, when he calls a Reaper out on breaking a rule, or doing something wrong, nine times out of ten they’ll listen to him and back off. He’s the Game’s guardian of sorts, and works tirelessly to make sure it stays fair, and true to form. That being said, even when he’s doling out a lecture to a rule-breaking Reaper, he never seems too outwardly serious. There’s just something in his demeanor that prevents that, it seems. He’s incredibly dedicated to his job and position, though, and will fight tirelessly to ensure that it runs smoothly.
As an angel he has a natural affinity towards the arts, and all things creative, though his passion in particular is in the visual area. He uses his graffiti and Imprinting abilities to spread creativity and imagination, and spark inspiration. He strives to induce personal growth, and to better society as a whole. Unlike others from his world who have similar goals, however, Hanekoma doesn’t just see the bigger picture. He looks at every single piece of the puzzle, every single human, Player, Reaper, and angel, and doesn’t see a single one of them as dispensable. Death and erasure are inevitabilities that he accepts, of course, but even after living the long life he has, he hasn’t become jaded enough to stop looking at individuals and shift only to the bigger picture.
He bonds with people, regardless of who or what they are with relative ease, though he definitely tends to get on people’s nerves sometimes. Despite that, he has very few real enemies, especially given the fact that no one but the Composer knows that Hanekoma and the Producer are one and the same. He has a very flippant attitude towards most things, and from time to time will take great pleasure in teasing people (like calling Neku “Phones” no matter how many times he’s corrected), though it’s virtually always good natured. Beyond a shadow of a doubt, Hanekoma is one of the most charismatic people you will ever meet, and even as he infuriates you with something or another, there’s just something about him that perpetually draws people in, and back to him. A combination of natural charisma and his angelic nature just make people want to be around him and talk to him more often than not.
Appearances aside, Hanekoma hides a vast wealth of knowledge and wisdom behind his (self proclaimed) “hip,” and sometimes goofy, exterior. He’s lived many lifetimes, and served as a guide for countless Players in the Reaper’s Game, all within the realm of the rules governing his position though, of course. He’ll do anything he can to encourage both personal growth and the growth of a society or even humanity as a whole, whether it be by approaching someone directly and having a heart to heart with them, Imprinting them, or just pulling strings behind the scenes to help them head in the right direction. It’s literally a big part of what he lives for, and he absolutely enjoys it.
He’s always a bit of an enigma, though the reasons for that are twofold. First and foremost, no one is allowed to know who and what he really is within the Game. In fact, most people (Players and low ranking Reapers alike) don’t even realize that the position of Producer exists. Even some Officer Reapers and Game Masters have been ignorant to his presence and duties while he has watched over the game, being sure to keep everyone in line. The second reason, of course, is the simple fact that he gets a kick out of it. He enjoys infuriating people (especially Neku) with the way he can talk about himself for absolute ages, and yet never give away anything meaningful.
Believe it or not, there is a serious side to Sanae Hanekoma. The reports he writes on the subject of the Game show just how seriously he takes his position and duties. He keeps watch over the Reaper’s Game, and all of Shibuya, and is willing to do whatever it takes to keep things in balance. He was willing to not only betray one of his closest friends, but also take on the status of “Fallen Angel,” a social stigma that could easily lead to his death, all for the sake of the greater good. Despite all appearances, he is a very deep individual, firmly believing that darkness is husband to light, and willingly making sacrifices that would have a profound impact on his own life because he believed that they were worth it. In the end, protecting Shibuya so that it could continue to grow and develop and someday learn to thrive was worth more to him than the things that he personally held dear.
And finally, Hanekoma is perpetually hopeful. He has an unwavering faith in humanity as a whole, even through all of their ups and downs. Humans are flawed creatures by nature, a fact he is well aware of, but they also arguably have the most room for growth, the most potential to change, and to spark change in others. He believes, and always will, that if we can “accept society as an ever-changing thing, and your mind will also become flexible. Individuals will link together, and enact change throughout society.”

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Powers & Abilities
• Nigh-omnipotent: As the Producer, Hanekoma is virtually the only being from his world more powerful than the Composer (Joshua). As such, there's not a whole lot that he can't do. His powers mimic those of the reapers below his level (teleportation, telekinesis, energy manipulation, telepathy, noise summoning and manipulation, etc), as well as going above and beyond, extending to full blown reality warping and manipulation. He can shift his vibe up and down at will, and the higher the "frequency" he's tuned to, the more powerful he is.
• Noise form: Sanae has the ability to take on a Noise form. In this form, he’s more resilient to harm than either his RG or UG forms, and gains several new ability. His noise form actually splits him in two, and he is represented by a Leo Cantus, and a Tigris Cantus, both still him, but they can act independently of each other. While in this form he can move incredibly quickly, and gains superhuman levels of strength. Both halves of his Noise form have incredibly sharp claws and teeth, capable of rending and tearing. He can also create illusionary duplicates of himself in this form, and shift into a shadow form, temporarily boosting his defenses.
• Item creation: As Producer, Hanekoma can create literally any object he wants or needs near-instantaneously, so long as he can picture what he wants. He can create magical items as well as mundane (like his phone, which is an Angelic item), and alter normal items to give them magical properties. Any item he creates will last indefinitely until he dismisses it, which he can do at any time, regardless of where the item may be at the time.
• Souls: Hanekoma can sense, read, and manipulate souls. This extends to something akin to mind reading, as well as giving him the potential to alter things like memories, and emotions. He's also capable of changing the state of a soul, which most notably, means that he can recruit any players he deems as truly exceptional, and offer them the opportunity to become Angels.
• Viva AM?: Back home he was one of a whole host of Angels, though he was the only one to interact directly with the Reapers' Game. He had some fairly strict guidelines that he was expected to follow...though now that he's cut off from the rest of his kind, those guidelines are technically null and void, giving him a whole lot more freedomthat he'll probably be too lazy to take advantage of.
• Coffee: He can make the best damn coffee you've ever tasted.
• CAT/WildKat: Though you would never guess it by looking at him (or the state of his cafe), Hanekoma is actually quite a skilled businessman. He knows the exact ideal way to run a business, how to turn a profit, and can crunch numbers and draw up figures and plans like it's what he was born to do...but simply put, when it comes to his own endeavors, he just doesn't. As CAT, however he's displayed an incredible amount of business sense, so much so, in fact, that it's largely speculated that CAT isn't a person, but rather a group of people all working together.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Main/Important Equipment
• Cell phone: Not only is it a cell phone, but it's angelic technology as well. He can alter it in any number of ways, but right now its main purpose is the fact that he can call or text anyone, anywhere, with or without having their number. It can also be used as a conduit for other abilities, but it's most useful for communication.
Weaknesses
Psychological Flaws...
• Laziness: When it comes to stuff outside his job as Producer, Hanekoma is just really lazy. Seriously. He doesn't do much besides promote his cafe and drink coffee.
• The greater good: He's willing to sacrafice anything and everything for the greater good. He took a huge risk in giving Sho taboo Noise knowledge, not only betraying Joshua, but the angels as well.
• Moral code: Despite having so much power easily at his disposal, he very rarely makes use of any of it. Not only is he lazy, but he's very particular about the situations in which he uses his abilities. For the most part, he's pretty content to just...live a normal life, and pull strings from behind the scenes.
• Anonymity and mystery: Hanekoma refrains from open use of his powers for the sake of keeping his true identity a secret. The last thing he wants is to be openly identified as an angel for several reasons. First of all, he prefers to do his work behind the scenes, unknown and unseen. Second, he enjoys the life he leads as a "human," and the air of mystery that surrounds him. And finally, being identified as an angel would make him a target, and he loathes unnecessary combat (and even that of the necessary variety), so if he can avoid fighting by any means, he likely will.
Physical Flaws...
• Pain and death: When he's on the RG and his vibe is tuned all the way down, despite the fact that his body is slightly stronger and more durable than a normal human's body, he can still definitely feel pain. The human body can also be killed, which will kick him back up onto the higher plane until he can pull himself back together.
Other Flaws...
BLAH BLAH BLAH
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
History....
Sanae Hanekoma is an angel, and one of the ones that was 'born' into the position. He has existed for thousands of years, going back before anyone but other angels can remember. He's always been a guardian of some form, and working tirelessly behind the scenes to lead humanity in the proper direction. He's used Imprinting in a variety of ways over the centuries to help forge the path that humanity was supposed to take, protecting and guiding those who had particularly bright souls, or strong imaginations, though the two often go hand in hand.
He rarely left the Higher Plane -- the level of existence accessible only by angels and occasionally the very upper tier of Reapers -- except for extraordinary circumstances, as he could do all he needed to do from his home. That began to change, however, when society began modernizing. Cities rose, and creativity with them. Things seemed to be on the ideal path...until they weren't. Things began to falter. Crime and hatred and negativity spiked, though as long as creativity and imagination stayed strong, there was really no room for angelic interference. He did, however, take a slightly more hands on role during this time, downtuning his vibe just enough to take on a visible "human" form in the RG, or 'real' world.
It was there that he met a young boy with an absolutely stunning soul, and one of the most creative minds he had ever seen. This boy, unlike everyone else around him, was special in the fact that he could see and hear things in different planes of existence, most notably the Underground -- the world of the reapers...and dead humans. The realm that the Composer used to judge the dead of the world. He realized this, and reached out to the boy, who had otherwise isolated himself, trying to set him on the right path, encourage him to make use of his talents, and all of that creativity and imagination he had.
He failed.
The boy killed himself, committing suicide for the express purpose of entering the Underground. Once he was there, he tracked down and defeated the Composer, taking the title for himself. From there, the new Composer destroyed the UG, and completely reshaped it, and such was the birth of the Reaper's Game. It was a new way to judge the souls of the dead, as only those who survived the game were afforded the opportunity to stand before the Composer directly. Hanekoma eventually took up the position of Producer of the Game, which meant he was in charge of maintaining order and enforcing the Composer's rules. No one but the Composer was aware of his role, or even his existence for the most part. He maintained a 'human' form and life for the purposes of being available, and interacting with the Game, establishing WildKat Cafe, and continuing his work as the mysterious artist CAT, painting murals all across Shibuya, all imprinted with messages that would call out to those with strong souls and imaginations.
One week before the start of the Game, the Composer confided in Hanekoma his plan to destroy Shibuya because of the dark turn the city had taken in recent years. Hanekoma expressed his disapproval of the plan, but was unable to change the Composer's mind, which lead to him forming plans of his own. He enlisted the help of Sho Minamimoto, a rogue Reaper Officer who wanted the role of Composer for himself, giving him the knowledge of Taboo Noise. The Composer -- who would later become known as Joshua -- was Hanekoma's closest friend in the world, and it pained him greatly to have to betray him like that...but Shibuya had such potential, and was so beautifully unique, he simply couldn't let it be destroyed. Joshua informed him that he had made a wager with the Game's Conductor, and would be picking a proxy to play in his stead, which was when he found and killed Neku Sakuraba.
During Neku's first week of the game, Hanekoma watched him closely, providing guidance, insight, and even help (in the form of giving him a pin that would help stabilize his volatile Soul), hoping to spark personal growth and change in the boy. His ultimate goal was to show Neku that the world wasn't the place he'd thought, and teach him that not only were other people necessary for the world as a whole, they were also necessary for his personal world. He hoped that if Neku could change -- as he was not only strong, but the boy had been deemed the 'worst person in Shibuya' by the Composer -- that perhaps he could stay the Composer's hand. He saw Neku face to face a few times in the first week, but was often kept busy by requests from the Composer, as well as his other duties as Producer.
By the end of the proxy's third week, however, Hanekoma had seen his goal accomplished. Neku had changed -- learning to trust other people, and open himself up to them, even forming a genuine bond with Joshua. This personal change from Neku played a huge part in saving Shibuya, which Hanekoma was immensely grateful for. Once the game had finished, he and Joshua kept tabs on Neku and his friends, all of whom had been returned to life by the Composer. As they sat, observing the group meeting up, unseen by the world, Hanekoma noted that Joshua seemed "down." It seemed to the Angel that his friend was truly upset that he couldn't join them. Hanekoma attempted to remind Joshua that "it's their world," that they decide what to do with it, and he shouldn't interfere...but Joshua ignored him, storming off in the divine sense of the word. Chuckling, Hanekoma made to follow him, but because of interference from the rifts, he ended up here. :c Rude, rifts, rude.
