Category: Canon -- Anime -- Fairy Tail
Ranking: Hero
Reason for being on AM: dem rifts
Basic Details
Age: 45
Species: Human
Personality: Gildarts is a laid-back, easygoing person. He's also warmhearted and kind, and has great interest and faith in the new generation of Fairy Tail's Mages. He is well respected by the whole town and guild, with the citizens going as far as to literally rearrange the town's layout whenever he's around, creating a large, empty road for him to walk to the Guild, to prevent accidental damage. He also appears to be a bit absent-minded and oblivious, and apparently doesn't pay attention to what he's doing, such as not recognizing the guild or Mirajane. He also has a tendency to break through walls with his Crash Magic in order to pass, rather than simply using the door, something which prompted the inhabitants of Magnolia to create the town's rearranging process.
When he enters a fight, he often points out that he is bad at and dislikes holding back, and Happy made it clear that Gildarts is well known for obliterating his opponents. When fighting, Gildarts would often employ exclusively hand-to-hand combat while using Crash to destroy things other than humans, such as the ground or Magic attacks, to avoid human casualties. Should he be pushed to the limit, or choose not to hold back, his Magic power would react similarly to Makarov's Giant Wrath, except it doesn't destroy everything around him in terms of intensity. His fighting spirit is similar to Natsu's, as he himself admitted, in that he respects his opponents, neither taking them too lightly nor overdoing. He also won't turn down a fight challenge offered to him, but he may ask to fight later after some urgent business is first dealt with.
In many ways, Gildarts appears to be somewhat of a lone wolf. He left the guild three years before the start of the series to take on a 100-year mission by himself. He also left the guild once he was declared the fifth master, passing on the mantle of leadership once again to Makarov, suggesting that he may feel uncomfortable with a leadership position, or at least disliking the added responsibility. Once the title of master was passed, Gildarts immediately left the guild again, stating that while Fairy Tail would become the number one guild in Fiore once more, it was not his job to do that. In addition, during the fight between Bluenote Stinger and himself, he had his guild mates leave the area so that he could fight Stinger one-on-one (although this was most likely done to keep the others alive, as they would have been caught in the fighting).

Powers & Abilities
- Superhuman Strength: Gildarts possesses extremely vast physical strength. He is capable of easily smashing through most anything in his way, and the sheer force from his punches or kicks can generate shockwaves and waves of pressurized air capable of slicing through steel, stone, and flesh from dozens of feet, or simply send someone flying as if hit by a runaway truck. His overwhelming physical power enabled him to function with barely any hindrance to his abilities even when under a crushing gravity field of several hundred, or several thousand times normal gravity.
- Superhuman Durability: Gildarts is extremely durable to all manner of injury. Aided by his immense magic power, he can withstand all manner of both physical and magical assaults with virtually no injury. He can break blades on his bare skin, withstand massive explosions of fire or pure energy without harm, and even when dealing with opponents of similar strength to his own overwhelming power, can mostly shrug off their blows as if they were nothing.
- Superhuman Resilience: As tough as he is, it is possible to injure Gildarts, and even in such an event, he is incredibly resistant to pain and injury, able to continue functioning long past the point at which most would have fallen unconscious from sheer pain, injury or blood loss, or even died. During a confrontation with Acnologia, Gildarts was completely overwhelmed and suffered a devastating blow, losing both his left arm and leg, and two organs, in addition to nearly being completely disemboweled, and not only surviving, but making a complete recovery in a remarkably short time.
- Immense Magic Power: Gildarts possesses a truly massive level of magic power. At rest, even when not exerting or using his power, he exudes a faint whisper of power that speaks to the nature of his magic. When angered or he must fight at full power, Gildarts' massive magic power generates a white aura that, when fully exerted, can devastate the surrounding area, cracking the ground, making the air thick and heavy, sending out shockwaves that can literally blow a person away, and even forcing weaker mages to their knees with its sheer weight and force. His magic power can be felt for a great distance when fully exerted, and can even be used as a sort of armor, yet further augmenting his already impressive durability, should the need ever arise.
- Crash: Gildarts' primary magic, Crash is an extremely powerful type of magic that smashes anything and everything it used against to pieces. It can destroy nearly anything, even the rare materials that Gildarts cannot simply shatter with raw physical power, and can even be employed against other magic and forms of energy, literally shattering the magic into pieces and nullifying it completely. In the event there is a magic too powerful to be simply shattered in this manner, Gildarts can also use his Crash to shatter parts of the magic, weakening it and deflecting it. The only flaw to this magic is that due to its extreme destructive power and complicated nature, not even Gildarts can fully control it, and sometimes accidentally destroys things unintentionally or when he isn't paying attention.
- Disassembly Magic: Gildarts' second magic, Disassembly Magic creates a net-like pattern of energy that runs completely through whatever it touches, tangible or not. The objects struck by this magic are split apart into numerous tiny versions of the original. When used on magic, the attack is effectively rendered useless, and the same holds true for when used on nearly any sort of weapon or object. When used on a person, the recipient is split into numerous doll-like versions of themselves. This process will revert after some time, or Gildarts can voluntarily reverse the effect at any point.
- Magic Blasts: Gildarts can imbue his blows with either raw magic or, to MUCH more devastating effect, his Crash. This usually produces massive blasts and explosions, in addition to rippling shockwaves of raw power in the air that more often than not split the ground and cause tremors in the immediate area. He has a notable technique involving this, called Crushing Evil, Spreading the Truth: Empyrean, wherein he gathers Crash into one fist and strikes through an opponent's attack, nullifying it, and launching them into the air with an explosive uppercut, sending them flying a massive distance as well as causing an explosive tremor in the earth around him.
- Master Combatant: In addition to his impressive physical and magical capabilities, Gildarts is an extremely accomplished combatant. He was capable of defending himself against a determined Natsu using only one arm, and swiftly overwhelm and smash him into the ground, without moving a single step. Even against opponents of similar power and strength which warrant an actual fight, Gildarts displays a great level of skill, prioritizing deftly blocking or avoiding an opponent's blows and countering with devastating punches, smashing blows or headbutts.
