In a world peppered with rifts that were growing in number by the day, there were all sorts of obstacles in place for anyone who wanted to make a difference in the way things were run around here. Sarafine, for instance, wasn't all that thrilled about the fact that in most places in this world, humans were still in power. It couldn't go on for much longer; sooner or later, something was going to give. Either the humans were going to decide they were done tolerating the variety of new species they suddenly had to share their space with, or (more likely, in her opinion) the 'survival of the fittest' rule was going to take effect, and humanity was going to be wiped out - or at least dragged out of their position as the dominant species of the planet. If that was going to happen, though, Abraham had made it clear that they were going to have to dispose of anyone or anything who proved to be a problem along the way.
The question was, where would they start?
New York City seemed ideal, since the majority of the rifts seemed to open up there. Sarafine had spent the last several weeks gathering as much information on the local key players as she could, and had discovered the presence of several powerful entities. Some might be useful - and others could very well prove to be a threat. Then there were those that were just minor annoyances, like the teenage girl who seemed to have taken a liking to playing god and creating all sorts of monstrosities, and then letting them run amok around the city. Her creatures weren't human, but they were, for all intents and purposes, useless. They seemed to exist for no purpose other than to elevate the status of their 'mother', who seemed to be interested in turning New York into her own domain. Well. She could hardly allow that to happen. Even if this 'Broodmother' wasn't currently active, she had her monsters positioned inconveniently around the city - her beetle-like creatures, for one, seemed to serve as spies, reporting all they heard around New York back to their creator. That alone could complicate things, and made the Broodmother a figure who needed to be dealt with sooner rather than later.
Normally, Sarafine would have been reluctant to flaunt her abilities, or even betray herself as anything more than human to society at large. These circumstances made things a bit different, though. Now, she got to paint herself as a hero, having exposed the Broodmother to the public, and being one of the few who'd volunteered to take care of the monster problem. The idiot Mortals who plagued the city like rats cowered in their homes until those stronger than them had taken care of the problem - typical, of course. But it didn't really matter, because she was looking forward to it. It would be fun.
Having located the Broodmother's 'headquarters', so to speak - the place where the majority of her monsters made their home - Sarafine had formulated a fairly simple plan. She'd flush them all out, deal with the hoard of them that were bound to come stampeding out to defend their home, and then take her time picking of the last of the stragglers that lingered around the city. If the others who had volunteered their service to take care of this problem decided to show up, it would only make things that much easier...and it would also give her a nice, close-up look at some of New York's more powerful residents, with any luck.
But that remained to be seen - at any rate, she couldn't wait any longer. Without further hesitation, Sarafine set her plan in motion and, without even blinking, set fire to the interior of 'The Maw', as it was apparently called. Time to smoke these vermin out.
