How did you find us?: I was there when we pulled this site, kicking and screaming, from the womb of cyberspace.
Category: OC
Name: Dylan Mathis
Alias: He’s toying with a few, but nothing solid yet.
Age: 17
Ranking: Heroic Neutral
Physical Appearance: Dylan is rather short, standing only at about five and a half feet. He is thin and not really muscular, in fact some would call him scrawny. He has fine features and a pale complexion. He has a glossy mop of blond hair that falls into natural ringlets that frame his face. His eyes are a bright blue and seem to radiate shadow instead of light, they are heavy, and honestly pretty creepy.
His astral form looks like this
Personality: Dylan is one of those quiet ones that they tell you to look out for. Dylan is usually nice, if a bit serious, with a dry sense of humor. He is a caring person but often holds grudges against individuals. He is a very sensitive person, no one knows his failings as well as he does. At times he can become moody or introspective and is easily irritated at invasions of space. He can become angry and lash out at others, sometimes for no apparent reason at all. Dylan loves to read and has amassed a lot of information about the world from his beloved books, because of this sometimes he comes off as a bit of a know-it-all.
Powers/Abilities:
Psychic: Dylan is possibly one of the most powerful psychic minds on earth. He is able to employ psychic energies for various purposes and sense when others employ them.
Empathy: Dylan possesses the ability to feel the emotions of other people. This allows him to tell a persons true alignment and whether they are telling the truth or not.
Mind Reading: Dylan is able to read the thoughts and memories of other people. This is an ability that he uses only when he has no other alternative and not something that he is all together comfortable with.
Psychic Defense: Dylan is able to employ his own psychic energies to protect his mind from intrusion. These defenses are far from perfect however, especially when he is employing his own powers.
Astral Projection: He is able to release his spiritual essence from his body to travel incredible distances very quickly. With this ability he has traveled to the ends of the universe. Within his astral form it is much easier to use his Awareness. His astral form is invisible and intangible within the physical world, in the astral plane or spirit worlds, Dylan actually possesses a fair amount of power. He is able to manipulate the spiritual landscape to some extent.
Retrocognition: The ability to see events of the past. Generally, he needs to be in the area to view what happened in its past. He can also use this ability to read the past of a specific object.
Far-seeing: He possesses the ability to view events happening at the current moment without being in the vicinity.
Precognition: The most difficult ability that he possesses. It allows him to view events that have yet to happen. This requires him to meditate for hours to obtain a vision of only a few minutes in length.
Thought Casting: He possesses the ability to project his thoughts as a manner of speech and then receive the thoughts that are projected to him.
Equipment:
The Beast Necklace: A necklace created by Ellen the Witch, originally to make him invisible to the Beast. His father destroyed the original and Ellen died before finishing this one. Later with the help of Ellens spirit Dylan refashioned the necklace to bind the beast. The beast is still able to communicate with Dylan when he is holding or wearing the necklace.
Psychological Flaws:
Focus: Many of Dylans subpowers require tremendous concentration. To look into the future requires full blown meditation for about an hour for one minute of sight. To see the past is easier because it's already happened and requires only about a few minutes of clear focus. His far-sight only needs a moment of focus to use, however he has to know what to look for.
Probability: The farther ahead he looks into the future the more possibilities there are. Normally he looks at the most probable future but that doesn't mean it's always true.
Physical Flaws:
Human: His body is still human and can be affected in any way that another human can.
Astral travel: though he is most powerful in his astral form, when he is traveling his body is completely defenseless. His astral form is also pretty useless on the physical plane.
Other Flaws:
Other psychics and magic users: Other psychics can not only sense him and his powers but also might have defenses against his powers. His powers can be stopped or weaked by magical barriers designed to keep them out.
Brief History: Dylan had always been a sensitive child. When other boys would run around and play rough in the mud, Dylan would spend his days reading. He saw his first ghost when he was five and, feeling friendless and lonely, made friends with it. His parents would smile when he spoke of Jimmy, who was a construction worker and had a love for Ford trucks. They of course assumed that Jimmy was just an imaginary friend. As the years went by, Dylan saw more and more ghosts, some of whom would stop and chat others didn’t. Jimmy appeared less and less and eventually stopped coming to see Dylan when Dylan turned ten.
When Dylan turned twelve his powers bloomed in full, he began hearing thoughts and seeing more of the spirit world than before. Around this time, he met the Beast. The Beast was a psychic being who fed on the mental and spiritual energy from humans. The Beast spent the next year attacking and feeding off Dylan, causing hysterical fits and periods of weakness for the boy. This went on for about a year. Dylans parents didn’t know how to help their son, but an old woman from down the street did. As a witch, she understood what was going on with the Beast and, while she didn’t have enough power herself to simply destroy it, she could keep it at bay. She gave Dylan a necklace to wear that would keep the Beast away.
Peace finally returned to Dylans family, years passed and Dylan eventually discovered his homosexuality. He kept this a secret from his family and the few friends he managed to get except for Ellen the witch. Ellen also taught him about his psychic powers and various things about magic.
Eventually, his father found the magic necklace that kept the Beast away and flipped a lid. Being a religious man, he destroyed it and told Ellen to never go near his son again. The Beast killed Ellen while she was crafting a new necklace. The Beast then continued his assault on Dylan and, while Dylan was no longer defenseless, he also lacked the power to defeat the Beast. Realizing what was actually going on was well beyond them, Dylans parents called on a priest. The priest attempted to exorcise the Beast but was not a trained exorcist and failed to do much more than anger the Beast. The priest interviewed Dylan and his family to try and find out what the beast wanted. During the course of the interview Dylan revealed his sexuality to his parents, who were greatly disturbed.
His parents sent Dylan to a church camp designed to reprogram him, hoping that a strong basis of faith and the eradication of his evil homosexuality and Ellens influence over him would make him normal and send the beast away. It didn’t work and eventually Dylan ran away. He returned to Ellens house and got the necklace that she was making for him when she died. He had a very heartrending talk with her spirit while they worked on a way to defeat the beast. The Beast appeared to finally finish the meal that was Dylan. Ellens spirit was devoured, but she managed to use the last of her existence to bind the beast to the necklace.
After the battle Dylan returned home and basically told his parents to go to hell. He packed up some clothes and his life savings and left. Now he’s hopping around the country, traveling on trains and busses, taking work for a week here or there before leaving and going elsewhere.
